Safety is the primary principle. During a total station power outage, the power capacitor bank circuit breaker should be opened first. When re-energizing, the power capacitor bank should be the last to be switched on. Energizing a charged power capacitor is strictly prohibited. Before re-closing, ensure the power capacitor is fully discharged (typically requiring waiting at least 3-5 minutes after disconnection).
To ensure safe operation, HV power capacitors are typically equipped with unbalanced current protection, overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, and instantaneous protection. Additionally, internal power capacitor elements may be fused to quickly isolate a failed component, allowing the rest of the bank to continue operating.
