What Is A Reactor?

A Reactor (also known as an inductor or choke) is an electrical component that uses inductance to limit, smooth, or filter current in a power system. By introducing controlled inductive reactance into the circuit, a reactor suppresses harmonic currents, limits inrush and short-circuit current, protects motors and drives from voltage spikes, and prevents resonance when combined with power capacitor banks — making it a core companion device for power factor correction, harmonic filtering, and variable frequency drive (VFD) systems.

A low voltage power capacitor is designed for systems ≤1kV (e.g., 400V industrial panels), while a high voltage power capacitor operates at 1kV to 35kV, typically used in utility substations or large MV motor compensation. Their internal dielectric, terminal insulation, and discharge resistors differ accordingly.

You need three pieces of data:

Average power factor (from utility bill)

Target power factor (usually 0.95–0.98)

Monthly active energy (kWh) and reactive energy (kVARh)

Standard capacitors may overheat under harmonics. You need a detuned power factor correction capacitor with a series reactor (typically 7% or 14%). Our harmonic‑rated series is marked “HD” and includes over‑temperature protection.
