What Is A Power Capacitor?

A Power Capacitor is a passive electrical component that stores and releases electrical energy in AC circuits. Unlike batteries (which store DC energy), a power capacitor is designed to react rapidly to voltage changes, providing or absorbing reactive power to stabilize voltage and improve the power factor of an electrical system.

In industrial and commercial facilities, low power factor (e.g., 0.6–0.75) is mainly caused by inductive loads such as motors, transformers, and lighting ballasts. This leads to higher utility penalties, overheating of cables, and reduced system capacity. A power factor correction capacitor works by supplying leading reactive power locally, cancelling out the lagging reactive power drawn by inductive equipment. As a result, the total apparent power (kVA) decreases for the same real power (kW), lowering electricity bills and freeing up transformer capacity.

Core Functions of a Power Capacitor

FunctionsDescription
Power Factor CorrectionRaises PF from 0.6–0.8 to ≥0.95, eliminating penalty charges.

Industry Applications

Where Our Power Factor Correction Capacitor Delivers Proven Results

A power factor correction capacitor is not a one-size-fits-all device. Below are typical scenarios where our power capacitor reduces reactive energy penalties, improves voltage stability, and lowers harmonic distortion.

Why Choose ZHIMING's Power Capacitor?

Self-healing metalized film

Our power capacitor uses high-grade polypropylene film with low loss and self-healing technology. Micro-breakdowns are instantly isolated, preventing catastrophic failure and extending service life to over 120,000 hours.

Overpressure separation protection

Each low voltage power capacitor features a patented internal overpressure disconnector. If internal pressure rises abnormally, the unit safely disconnects from the circuit – no explosion, no fire, no oil leakage.

Strict quality control & 100% aging test

Every power factor correction capacitor is subjected to a 72-hour burn-in at 1.2× rated voltage before shipment. Capacitance tolerance, dielectric loss, and thermal stability are individually recorded and traceable.

Broad voltage & kVAR customization

From 230V to 35kV, we manufacture both low voltage power capacitor and high voltage power capacitor with non‑standard ratings. MOQ flexible for OEM projects – your specifications, our fast turnaround.

Global certifications & third-party validation

ISO9001, CE, IEC 60831/60871, and National High-Tech Enterprise Certificate. Our power capacitor series is trusted by utilities and industrial plants in over 40 countries.

5-year warranty + lifetime technical support

We stand behind our products. Extended warranty up to 8 years available. Our engineers provide free sizing assistance, harmonic analysis, and on-site troubleshooting – before and after the sale.

A low voltage power capacitor is designed for systems ≤1kV (e.g., 400V industrial panels), while a high voltage power capacitor operates at 1kV to 35kV, typically used in utility substations or large MV motor compensation. Their internal dielectric, terminal insulation, and discharge resistors differ accordingly.

You need three pieces of data:

Average power factor (from utility bill)

Target power factor (usually 0.95–0.98)

Monthly active energy (kWh) and reactive energy (kVARh)

Use the formula: Required kVAR = Active Power (kW) × (tanφ₁ – tanφ₂). Or simply send us 30 days of load data – we will calculate it for free.

Standard capacitors may overheat under harmonics. You need a detuned power factor correction capacitor with a series reactor (typically 7% or 14%). Our harmonic‑rated series is marked “HD” and includes over‑temperature protection.

Our power capacitor units are designed for 120,000–150,000 hours (over 15 years) at rated voltage and ≤45°C ambient. End‑of‑life signs include capacitance loss >10% or visible bulging – we offer free capacitance testing kits for bulk orders.

Yes. Custom voltages (e.g., 480V, 525V, 690V) and non‑standard kVAR steps are available with a minimum order quantity. Contact us with your specification sheet for a fast quotation.
